How To Do Backup Recordings Using Flexible Recording Mode on the Panasonic DMR-E20(939 total words in this text)(12461 Reads) ![]() This example will attempt to explain how to put 2 films onto a DVD-R using FLEXIBLE RECORDING for best quality. Recording is simple but needs a little preparation for best results. The player needs to have all copy protection disabled this is not always possible with all players. Start the playback of the first film on the player and put the on screen display so that it shows the time remaining, whilst playing rewind the movie to the beginning and note the time remaining when the film restarts at the beginning. The film I use as an example displays 1:11:35, 1 hr 11 mins & 35 secs. Take a note of the length of the film, remove it and put the second film in the player and check the length as before. The second film I use as an example displays 1:12:45, 1 hr 12 mins & 45 secs. Set the on screen display on the player to off, leave it playing to ensure this has been done correctly. Now calculate the time of both these films together which in my case is 2hrs 24mins & 20 secs (I think) It is not advisable to use the maximum size for the DVD-R, so to make sure the recording does not burn to the brim I give it about 15 mins leeway and in this case decide to make the flexible timing mode 2hrs 40 mins. SETTING THE TIMER Put a blank recordable DVD-R into the recorder It’s now 9:30 so I will set the timer to start in 5 mins. Hit the TOP WINDOW button and navigate to TIMER RECORDING select the player input, in my case AV2 set the timer to commence at 9:35 & to stop recording at 12:15 this will give 2:40 mins if my calculations are correct, set the recording mode to FR. When the desired timer record settings are entered press ENTER and RETURN to exit the timer recordings settings mode. Press the TIMER REC and we now have about 4 mins to set up the player to playback the first film. SETTING UP THE PLAYBACK Set the player going and viewing the out put from the recorder (this will be in monochrome because the recorder is in standby). Just before the desired start point, PAUSE the playback. The recorder will come out of standby about 1 minute before the recording starts, after checking the disc it will go into record pause mode; press the STATUS button twice to use the on screen status mode which will show RECORD PAUSE and the real time. Watch the time in the display and wait with the player remote control until the recorder starts to record. Immediately the recorder comes out of RECORD PAUSE into RECORD press PLAY on the player remote to resume playback, the recording will have started and be in FR mode We need to stop the recording at the end of the credits for the film so when the film is finishing & showing the credits wait until the desired end point and press the TIMER REC on the recorder remote thus cancelling the recording. THE SECOND FILM We have now used up about 1hr 12mins of our FR recording and after a bit of messing about it is 11:00 we need to reset the timer to record for a further 1hr 28mins to fit the second film allowing the 15 over again. So set the timer to commence at 11:05 and stop at 12:33 selecting AV2 & FR mode as before when the timer is set correctly press TIMER REC on the remote and then prepare the player with the second film as before. Use the same procedure for starting the second film and stop the recording at the end of the credits as before. There will be only a small amount of space left on the DVD it will show 5-20 mins depending on the record mode this makes up a workable size for the DVD. TITLING THE DISC Titling the disc select TOP MENU on the remote control and select DISC INFORMATION select ENTER TITLE and enter the disc title via the on screen keyboard Titling of the individual films is done by selecting TOP MENU select DIRECT NAVIGATOR select the film to title and use the onscreen keypad to enter the titles. This job I find a little tedious but it only takes about 5 mins. The individual film titles are limited in length 44 characters for DVD-R. FINALIZING After the titling has been done and you are satisfied that this disc is up to your requirements the disc needs to be FINALIZED , enabling it to be used in stand alone DVD players or in PC DVD-ROM drives. This is done by selecting TOP MENU select DISC INFORMATION and select FINALIZE and takes about 5 mins after which you will no longer be able to record to it. On examination of the disc just recorded there is a small amount of unrecorded disc at the outer edge allowing copies to be made with most media without it sticking towards the end. COPYING THE DISC There are only a few readers that can read these disc images correctly for copying READ THIS POST ON THIS SUBJECT but with a suitable DVD reader they can be copied ON THE FLY or imaged to the hard drive with most good DVD burning software. Ripping the TITLE SET and burning gives playback menu problems with some players. Ripping & demuxing to remaster with such as SpruceUp works fine. |
