CMC Magnetics and Ritek, the top two producers of optical discs in Taiwan, will cooperate with an investigation by the European Commission (EC) into the suspected dumping of blank optical discs into the European Union (EU), according to the two companies.
The EC launched the investigation late last week at the request of the Committee of CD-R Manufacturers (CECMA), which represents European makers of optical discs including TDK Recording Media Europe and Fuki Magnetics. The investigation will cover the period of July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005 and will target imports of CD-R discs from China and Malaysia, CD-R and DVD+R/-R discs from Hong Kong and DVD+R/-R discs from Taiwan.

According to customs statistics, Taiwan exported US$573.36 million worth of optical discs to Europe in 2004, up 36.7% from 2003. In 2001-2002, 16 Taiwanese makers of CD-R discs were accused of dumping their products in the EU market and subject to antidumping tariffs of 18.8-39.5%.
