An Inquirer reader reports that when he bought a copy of the latest Dido album for his loved one, he discovered that Windows Media software wouldn't play the thing. In fact, for the CD to be played, its own media software was installed.
Dido is published by Arista – but have so far failed to comment on this phenomenon – and it publishes a number of other top artists too.
But if every publisher decides to take the same route, Windows users are going to have an awful lots of media stubs on their machines.
If this phenomenon is going be widespread in the future, couldn't the publishers strike some sort of deal with Microsoft?
Or is that a deal too far for music publishers?
